The data and grants coordinator reading at a desk with a laptop, folders, and a printed spreadsheet

Linden Park Neighbors · ACF-OCS CED report · due Sep 30

Tomas has the quarter in his head, in Notion, and in a grant spreadsheet. Not in one place.

Notion for nonprofits, compared

Notion keeps everything. Reporting needs structure.

Most small nonprofits already run on a known setup: everyone puts everything into Notion, and at deadline someone asks Notion AI to write the grant report. We kept one week of a community development corporation both ways and compared what came out.

What the Notion setup does well, and where it stops.

Notion is where a lot of good teams already live, and for the right reasons: it is fast, it holds any kind of page, and nobody needs training. The habit that forms is dump it in Notion. Captain check-ins, a merchant’s text, screenshots of the Instagram post, the façade-grant spreadsheet as an upload, a report draft with TODOs in it.

Notion AI is genuinely good at reading those pages back. Ask it what happened in September and it will summarize the pages it can find. What it cannot do is know which attendance count was the final one, which program a note belongs to, or whether a merchant’s quote had consent attached, because none of that was ever written down as a field. It was written down as prose.

The pile is complete. The structure is missing. At report time, structure is the whole job.

Same week, same six moments. Two ways to keep them.

    TODO: find 12-month survival numbers

Notion AI, asked how many grant recipients are still operating

I couldn’t find reliable numbers for storefronts still operating twelve months after closeout. Several pages mention the grants but the counts conflict. Would you like me to estimate?

Nobody typed a field. Each source arrived through its own feed and was matched to a program from the 990 import, typed by what it counts as, and kept with its evidence.

At report time. What each one produces.

Notion AI draft · CED report, business corridor

This quarter the corridor program continued to support local merchants. Liaisons assisted approximately 30 businesses with strong community support.

A bank partner contributed façade funding. [12-month survival: not found]

Merchant feedback was positive. [quote needs consent check]

Three gaps to chase by hand. Typically an afternoon per report, spent in spreadsheets.

What MissionAligned is for

What feeds the record on its own.

Every source lands in the same defined structure. That is the difference from a pile: not more effort, a shape. Programs come from your 990, types come from the entry, evidence comes attached.

Keep Notion. Give the reporting a record.
